Open Fall, 2002

The faculty and staff of Toledo Preparatory Academy strive to create an environment where personal growth, academic excellence and acceleration can thrive.  This is accomplished by…

bulletEncouraging and expecting hard work academically;
bulletEnhancing personal growth through the teaching of values;
bulletExpecting community involvement by assigning community service projects;
bulletEnlisting parental support through continuous communication with the school.

… a positive overall learning environment will be created for each student.

Toledo Preparatory Academy is the State of Ohio’s first charter school offering an accelerated college preparatory focus offering a curriculum intended to meet the individual needs of the student.  This is to say that if a student is accelerated in one subject, but not another, an individualized educational plan will be developed for the student.

School scheduling and assigned curricular course of study is designed to help in the acceleration process with students.  Longer class periods on two days allows for field trips, library visits, longer experiments and rehearsals when needed as well as allowing for more intense study in specific areas.

Realizing that not all students learn in the same fashion, a variety of teaching techniques are used in each classroom.  It is the philosophy of the faculty and staff of Toledo Preparatory Academy that more learning takes place when teaching methods are mixed.  Therefore, a combination of independent, cooperative, competitive, multiple intelligences and brain-based techniques are fully integrated into various elements of a student’s coursework.

A modified block schedule is used to teach language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, technology, foreign language and the arts.  All subjects are taught using the following:

bulletAcademic Content Standards Framework of Strands – content organizers
bulletAcademic Content Standards – what students should know and be able to do, and the overarching goals and themes
bulletBenchmarks – key checkpoints that monitor progress toward academic content standards.
bulletGrade-Level Indicators – what students should know and be able to do at each grade level
bulletIntegrated Checkpoints - monitor progress toward the benchmarks
