Open Fall, 2002

The Ohio Virtual Academy aims to empower students throughout Ohio with an innovative and effective educational program.  The school seeks to develop in students those qualities of mind and character that will help them grow into active, thoughtful, responsible citizens.  Ohio Virtual Academy aims to help students meet high expectations by offering them an individualized, rigorous, and self-paced instructional program that incorporates significant parental involvement.  This is accomplished through an innovative internet-based learning program that connects students, parents, and teachers in a 21st century learning community.

Students

The Ohio Virtual Academy is open to the public and offers educational opportunities for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.  Students are required to be residents of Ohio.

In Ohio Virtual Academy, parents (or other responsible adults) guide students through their daily course work using the K12 curriculum.  Responsible adults log on to the program, via the internet, and view students’ daily lessons, some of which involve on-line work with the pupil, but most of which involve work away from the computer using books, workbooks, a phonics program, math manipulatives, science and musical equipment and more – all of which are shipped directly to every family enrolling a student in the school.  Lessons have teaching components, practice components, assessments, and optional challenge programs.  The self-paced nature of the program means that gifted students can excel, and student experiencing difficulty can spend more time on tasks.

Services

Ohio certified teachers oversee the learning of each child in their class by reviewing student work for quality, accuracy, and understanding; accessing their online academic records (including daily lessons and assessments); and communicating with the parents (or other responsible adult) on regular basis at teacher conferences.  Teachers also grade student work and are available daily via phone or e-mail when students (or adults) have questions.  School administrators work out of the headquarters in Maumee.

The founders of Ohio Virtual Academy believe that this educational model offers a bold and innovative model for education.  The goal of providing the best possible education for our children can only be accomplished if we resolve to put our children first and empower them with high expectations and constant support.
