The educational model of the Mount Healthy Preparatory and Fitness Academy incorporates a distinct focus on five core proficiency areas, which are reading, writing, mathematics, science, and citizenship, as well as daily fitness instruction. The Academy applies a phonics-based approach to reading, and delivers instruction in an extended school day from 8:00-4:00. This ensures that every classroom teacher has a minimum of two hours of instructional time per day in both reading and mathematics and that the students receive a minimum of an hour and a half of fitness instruction in martial arts, soccer and/or tennis every day.
The Mount Healthy Preparatory and Fitness Academy is geared toward the education of students and families interested in an academically rigorous curriculum combined with a strong health and fitness program. The Mount Healthy Preparatory and Fitness Academy implements instructional models that develop students’ academic and physical fitness potential. The school also implements the Core Knowledge Curriculum by E.D. Hirsch, in combination with a phonics based reading program, Open Court, and a well-researched math curriculum, Saxon Math. The developers of the school believe that students should engage in an academically rich curriculum and one that has a solid empirical research base demonstrating improved academic achievement for urban youth.
Specifically, the mission of Mount Healthy Preparatory and Fitness Academy is to prepare students in grades k-8 for success in high school and beyond. The school stresses the value of academics, as well as lifelong health and fitness, to address the needs of the whole child.
