Opening 2007
The mission of the Foundation Academy is to embrace a diverse student body and inspire student success through an innovative, humanities-based curriculum, the cultivation of independent thinking, responsible citizenship and by holding students, families, the school and the community accountable for results.
The Foundation Academy will offer a more interdisciplinary approach to the arts and humanities. The thematic focus will be on art history with students staging smaller productions in thematic units based on historical plays, literature, or art works. Technology will play a vital role in cross-disciplinary study and project-based learning.
The Academy implements two compatible curriculums that embody the vision of teaching and learning the school’s mission. The morning session of school is devoted to the Core Curriculum, with intensive uninterrupted study of Literature, Phonics, Spelling, SRA Mathematics, and Science Anytime. Math and Science are taught as discrete subjects. The afternoon session consists of the Paragon Curriculum, a Humanities Curriculum that covers the following: Social Studies; History; Philosophy; Science; Visual and Dramatic Arts; Communications; Foreign Language; Entrepreneurship; Character Development; Mathematics; Music; and Physical Education. These subjects are integrated in conceptual monthly themes organized around the chronological history of world culture.
Students
The Foundation Academy provides students in grades K-5 with a challenging, effective program of study and strong moral development in a safe and nurturing learning environment. The focus is on students residing in the Akron Public School District and surrounding areas.
