Opened August 2001

The mission of Eagle Academy is to provide an atmosphere where students will develop a thirst for learning, creative expression and awareness of new horizons.  As a family of learners, students and staff exhibit depth of understanding, acceptance of others, personal integrity and responsibility, and a willingness to exercise leadership in their educational and social interactions.  Staff, students, and their families are committed to facing the challenges of the new century, believing that there is no problem too complex nor goal too lofty that cannot be mastered.

Because early development of reading and writing mastery is fundamental to a student’s success in learning any curriculum, Eagle Academy uses a multi-faceted approach to reading and writing, combining phonemic awareness, phonics and whole-language components.  Each component is introduced as each student’s cognitive abilities progress.  A respectful awareness and fostering of each child’s learning process is basic to the learning environment of Eagle Academy.

The phonics-based approach to early learning is supplemented with exposure to reading material drawn from standard reading lists developed in collaboration with the Accelerated Reader program.  Story-telling, group and individual reading, and homework assignments requiring parental involvement in reading are focused on giving the widest possible exposure to the joy of reading.  Reading as soon as letters and words can be successfully combined by children helps develop the strategic thinking skills that are paramount in a whole-language philosophy.

By combining the strengths of phonics-based and whole-language concepts, Eagle Academy is committed to proving that, through reading, excellence in education is achievable by all students.
