The Academy of Columbus believes that the school culture and environment have a significant impact on learning. Therefore, the school and staff members are completely committed to the mission of helping parents and guardians fulfill their responsibility to educate their children.
The Academy of Columbus believes that there are four main ingredients of robust and successful learning. First, schools must have a strong team of staff members, including an excellent school leader and qualified teachers. Second, teachers need an inter-disciplinary curriculum that stresses mastery of the basic building blocks of learning, while providing rich, varied subject matter that engages students’ curiosity and imagination, as well as promoting positive character development. Third, in order to learn, students must have a school environment that is safe, orderly, purposeful and nurturing. Fourth, the school must involve parents and guardians in the educational mission, and parents/guardians must take an active role in their children’s schooling. The Academy works hard to provide these ingredients in the recipe for student achievement.
The Academy’s approach to curriculum is to operate within sound, tested educational principles. The school has a wonderful, inter-disciplinary curriculum aligned to state standards, and is dedicated to meeting the educational needs and aspirations of every student, using the following educational principles as parameters:
-
Phonics reading program in the primary grades
-
Emphasis on the basic skills of reading fluency, writing, grammar, spelling, oral communication and computation
-
Moral/character education that is integrated into all classes and subject areas
-
Curricular materials that offer rich literature, art, music and drama
-
Math, science and history based curricula emphasize sequential learning, mastery of critical skills and project-based instruction that accesses various learning styles
-
Covenants with students and parents/guardians outlining the expectations of participation by the student, parent/guardian and the school
-
Frequent and consistent assessment of student progress; the results used to diagnose and address individual student performance as well as to improve the overall instructional program
-
Intervention and intensive help for any student who is struggling to learn/or not achieving at grade level in a particular subject area
In addition, the Academy of Columbus believes that technology is an intrical part of life and that adapting to evolving technology is essential for future citizens of the world. A major component of education is to afford students the opportunity to maximize connections among communication, technology and society. The school has a media center and at least four computers in every classroom.
