EdVantages charter schools fare well according to preliminary data

Posted: November 7, 2012

Ohio Council of Community Schools will be releasing its own analysis of student achievement (based on the preliminary data released in late October) very soon in our upcoming Fall 2012 newsletter. In the meantime, one of our management partners – EdVantages – has conducted an analysis of their schools – nearly all of which OCCS sponsors: Columbus Preparatory and Fitness Academy, Middletown Preparatory and Fitness Academy, Mt. Healthy Preparatory and Fitness Academy, Northland Preparatory and Fitness Academy, Performance Academy of Eastland, Springfield Preparatory and Fitness Academy, Toledo Preparatory and Fitness Academy, Trotwood Preparatory and Fitness Academy, and Whitehall Preparatory and Fitness Academy.

The results are so impressive we wanted to share a few highlights.

Despite serving large populations of economically disadvantaged students and being located in Ohio’s most “challenged” districts, Toledo Preparatory and Fitness Academy rated Excellent for the second year in a row. Trotwood Prep and Fitness, Performance Academy of Eastland, and Springfield Prep and Fitness are all Effective. The other schools are rated Continuous Improvement (CI) and EdVantages as a company has no school rated lower than CI. Springfield Prep (K-8) performed better than every local middle school in Springfield and better than all but one elementary school in the area, despite serving a population that has a very high number of students with special needs (45 percent). You can read about the school in the Springfield News-Sun here.

As a group, the EdVantages-operated charter schools outperformed their nearby traditional school district and have provided a high-quality alternative for students and families in those communities.
